| As a part of changes in European Commission’s senior management positions, which included replacements of the Directors-General for climate action, education and employment and others, Jean-Eric Paquet has replaced Robert-Jan Smits at the position of the Director-General for Research and Innovation. Jean-Eric Paquet is a French national and career civil servant, who has served as one of the tree Deputy Secretaries-General of the Juncker Commission. Within his 23 year experience in the European Commission, Jean-Eric Paquet has been involved in European Commission’s proposals for deepening the Economic and Monetary Union and for Industrial Policy Strategy. In view of the task to reach a consensus on 9th Framework Programme, Paquet’s decisions about the DG internal management could either consolidate or complicate this task. Robert-Jan Smits will become a senior adviser to the European Political Strategy Centre, the Commission’s in-house think tank. |
