H2020 Health Work Programme 2017 to Support More SMEs

On 8 July, during the information day on ‘Health, demographic change and well-being’, a work programme for 2017 (WP 2017) was introduced.  In an opening speech, Dr. Ruxandra Draghia–Akli, Director of DG Research and Innovation, mentioned that the total budget for WP 2017 is 486 mil. EUR, which will be allocated into calls on personalized medicine, coordination activities types of calls, SME instrument topics, and other actions such as InnovFin ID and Birth Day Prize. The final version of WP 2017 will be published at the end of July 2017 (click HERE to see the version published as of 25 July 2016).

As last year the success rate in the SME calls was very low with a high number of high quality proposals, in 2017 European Commission has decided to allocate additional funds (i.e. 35 mil EUR) to the SME topics.  According to Dr. Draghia-Akli, there is an evidence that companies that have received Phase 2 SME funding are more likely to attract private funding, thus, have a very good growth potential.

Health related SME calls to open in WP 2017 are:

  • SMEInst-05-2016-2017 – Supporting innovative SMEs in the healthcare biotechnology sector
    • Cell technologies in medical applications
    • Clinical research for the validation of biomarkers and/or diagnostic medical devices
  • SMEInst-06-2016-2017 – Accelerating market introduction of ICT solutions for Health, Well-Being and Ageing Well
