The COVID-19 Data Portal- Accelerate Coronavirus Research

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences (EMBL) and partners launch the COVID-19 Data Portal that is currently used by 73 000 scientists for vaccine development. This central repository facilitates data sharing and analysis.

A big of scientific efforts are taking place worldwide in order to help combat COVID-19. One of the biggest challenges is to share data and findings in a coordinated way, in order to understand the disease and to develop treatments and vaccines. To address this challenge, EMBL-EBI and partners operate the COVID-19 Data Portal, which brings together relevant datasets submitted to EMBL-EBI and other major centres for biomedical data.
The COVID-19 Data Portal enables researchers to upload, access and analyse COVID-19 related reference data and specialist datasets- such as raw and assembled viral sequences, and signposting to datasets that cannot openly be shared, in particular patient data subject to GDPR requirements, from clinical trials, hospitals and national healthcare systems.

The portal makes it easier for scientists, public health and healthcare professionals to collaborate, which will help accelerate the development of diagnostics, treatment and vaccines.
